Surprise surprise, but this afternoon the Pelkhil boys beat Kelki HSS, probably the strongest team in the tournament. Kelki has close to 900 students (compared to 220 at Pelkhil) and they are able to attract many national football players on scholarship. So the victory was sweet!
We were down 1-0 quite early on through a good, though deflected shot. The game was fairly balanced through out with both teams having a healthy number of shots on goal. Our No.6 balanced the account with a spectacular strike on volley that whizzed passed the keeper’s outstretched hands and comfortably into the back of the net. Our second goal came sometime after from No.8 whose goal seemed imminent for a long time given the sustained pressure on the Kelki goal. It finally came through following two consecutive corners. Again another spectacular goal that gave the Kelki keeper little chance to defend.
Despite an OT that never seemed to end, the boys were able to defend the scoreline to the end giving Pelkhil an extremely important victory this tournament. Our offense was a bit skittish this time but our defense was rock solid, and an important part of our victory. Our next game will be against Changangkha MSS.
Our girls’ team did not fair so well against Babesa MSS. Although younger, the Babesa girls have been making a name for themselves by knocking out teams consisting of older players. They beat Pelkhil 4-1. Not good! Add to that the fact that two of our main players were missing today and did not hand over the uniforms. So with a shortage of uniforms our team could field only 10 players during this game. What a shame!
