Bhutan Inter-School Competition: After answering seven rounds of questions and scoring 110 points, Motithang higher secondary school (HSS) yesterday beat 17 schools, and took home the first prize, in the finals of the Bhutan inter-school quiz competition in Phuentsholing.
Phuentsholing HSS took second place with 100 points, and Yangchenphug HSS with 95 points stood third.
Eighteen high schools from the 44 in Bhutan participated in the quiz on general knowledge, science and entertainment. Eight schools were quizzed in the finals yesterday. Other schools that reached the finals were Ugyen Academy, Samtse HSS, Yozerling HSS, Pelkhil School and Nima HS.
Two rounds of semi-finals were held on Saturday.
Motithang HSS quiz team won trophies and cash prize of Nu 10,000 each; while Phuentsholing HSS quiz team won Nu 6,000 each and trophies. Yangchenphug high school was awarded trophies. Education minister Thakur Singh Powdyel was the chief guest and awarded the prizes.
The quiz, which was organised by India House Club in Phuentsholing, in association with the education ministry and India Foundation, was part of the Sherig Centenary celebrations.
The event’s coordinator Mahendra Banthia said the quiz was held with an objective to benefit children, and to make them learn something new. “It’s also to encourage children to improve their general knowledge,” he said. “It was a successful event.”
The quiz is held annually.
